This type of inspection aims to detect coke deposits in the tubes and external scale on the tubes from combustion. These two factors have a direct impact on the energy efficiency of the furnace, as well as on the mechanical integrity of the heat tubes. Monitoring the temperature of the tubes is an essential measure to prevent tube rupture. We have infrared cameras with spectral filters that allow observation of the state of furnace tubes, even through flames and combustion gases.

Advantages :

  • High-resolution thermal images, with detailed report showing details of all tubes
  • Observations of furnace tubes through the flames
  • Battery-powered infrared camera with real-time results

To consider :

  • Requires access (doors) to look inside the oven
  • Interpretation is greatly improved when inspections are carried out at certain time intervals to observe the evolution

inspection of pipe welds by PAUT

The ultrasonic phased-array technique allows multiple angles to be used simultaneously, creating a two-dimensional pie shape view across the weld section.

The ultrasonic phased-array technique allows multiple angles to be used simultaneously, creating a two-dimensional pie shape view across the weld section. This greater coverage weld allows detection of cracks on the opposite surface, as well as a good interpretation of the type of defect.

Advantages :

  • Excellent probability of detection
  • Characterization and precise positioning of defects
  • Volumetric inspection, not just on the surface
  • Applicable on hot surfaces (variable maximum temperature)

To note :

  • Requires application of couplant to inspection surfaces
  • Sensitive to irregularities at the contact surface

Certifications:

  • ASNT, SNT-TC-1A, UT and PAUT, Levels 2 and 3
  • CGSB, UT, Level 2
  • API, QUPA
  • ASNT, UT, Level 3

We are able to measure plate thicknesses on various elements of the tanks, such as walls, roof, floor or nozzles. We typically use phased-array ultrasonic testing which allows faster coverage and better interpretation of surface profiles.

Advantages :

  • Precise thickness data
  • Possibility to inspect through a uniform and well-adhered paint
  • PAUT: faster coverage of large areas
  • PAUT: better interpretation of surface profiles

To consider :

  • Need for contact with the inspected part
  • It may be difficult or impossible to take measurements from a heavily corroded contact surface

The non-destructive liquid penetrant testing method is simple to perform, but requires a few successive steps. This method makes it possible to detect cracks or other defects opened or connected to the surface, and is mostly used for non-ferromagnetic materials, such as aluminum or stainless steels.

Advantages :

  • Simple execution
  • Excellent probability of detection
  • Applicable on a wide variety of geometries

To note :

  • Requires a very clean, paint-free surface
  • Inspected surface should be rather smooth, difficult to apply on porous surfaces
  • More "messy" process

Certification of Inspectors:

  • ASNT, SNT-TC-1A, PT Level 2
  • CGSB, PT Level 2
